The Formation of the Kaneohe Business Group
The Kaneohe Business Group (KBG) had its beginning in 1969 when several businessmen and women voted to form the Kaneohe-Kahaluu Businessmen and Women's Association with the election of their officers and directors. This group under the leadership of Evans H.M. Yim, was organized "... to inspire in it's members a sense of individual civic responsibility and active interest in community affairs; to promote the commerce and industry of Kaneohe and to disseminate business information; to attract and interest visitors; and generally to advertise and promote the welfare of Kaneohe." It's primary goal is to seek ways and means to strengthen the local economy. Serving with Yim were vice presidents George Clark, Damien Fariar and Jack Kaneshiro. Sandra Akina was secretary and Clifton Ushiroda was treasurer. Directors were Dr. Robert D.Y. Chang, Dr. Kenneth I. Ishimoto, Edgar Jones, Priscilla Lau, Thomas F. McCormack, Darryl L. Rose, Richard F. Strawn, P.Y. Chang, Morris Yoshii, Frederick K. Sanjume, and George E. Llewllyn. In 1970, the association changed its name to the Kaneohe Business Group. At this time, there were 36 progressive businessmen and women who had the foresight for the future development of Kaneohe. Five years later, the group's membership directory listed more than 100 business firms and individuals. Businessmen and communiaty workers are attracted to the Kaneohe Business Group far a variety of reasons. The group's monthly meetings are highlighted by informative, interesting and sometimes controversial guest speakers. The KBG members are active in community and political issues that may affect the small businesses in Hawaii. Health benefits can be obtained through the group. They sponsor, together with other service organizations in Kaneohe, the largest Christmas parade island-wide. |
